The more cardiovascular exercise you get in your teens and twenties, the better your memory may be in middle age. In a recent study, researchers monitored participants in their mid twenties to see how long they could run on a treadmill without getting out of breath. Twenty-five years later, the same participants were given cognitive tests to measure verbal memory and executive function. The 50 year olds who lasted longest on the treadmill at 25 outperformed their peers who were less cardiovascularly fit at 25. While the differences were modest, the cognitive tests used in the study are the same ones used to identify dementia. But don’t worry — no matter what your age, your heart and brain can always benefit from physical exercise.
