Speaking more than one language could be powerful protection for your brain, according to one of the largest studies on bilingualism to date. Study participants who spoke two or more languages saw an average 4.5 year delay in the onset of dementia symptoms compared to their monolingual peers. Even those who couldn’t read or write enjoyed this benefit! The study’s authors believe that the ability to activate one language while suppressing another improves the development of executive functions and attentional tasks such as response inhibition and focus.
